Difference between H.264 & H.265 video codecs

When you are viewing or downloading video footage from a security camera, the amount of raw data coming out the back of the professional HD camera is a massive. It's not convenient to transport it to your dispay. So the videos need to be compressed to reduce the amount of bits into a more manageable form. Of course, data can not be compressed too much, which will lead to poor quality. The data need to be compressed with a new technology while retaining the same quanlity. 


In a word, video codecs, such as H.264 and H.265, work by essentially breaking a video down into bits with special algorithm, shrinking the file down and then allowing it to be decompressed. 

 

H.264

Also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC), H.264 is a block-oriented motion-compensation-based video compression strandard. It has been considered the most commonly used format for recording, compressing, and distributing video content. It is used on streaming internet sources like YouTube and Vimeo.


H.265

High Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC), abbreviated as H.265, is to boost video streaming. With new much higher definition devices, such as security cameras, becoming more and more popular, which lead to more video streaming services, more bandwidth and storage capability will be inevitably needed. This would be a hard task for H.264 and be a bit difficult to solve, especially when the storage capacity is taken into consideration. To meet such demands, H.265 came out. It promises a 50% of volume reduction since it's algorithm adopts efficient coding method by encoding video at the lowest possible bit rate while maintaining a high image level. 


What H.265 can do for security cameras?

All in all, both H.264 and H.265 video codecs work by comparing differnt parts of a video frame in order to find out the ones that are overlapped within subsequent frams. These areas will be replaced with a short information, representing the original pixels. What distinguish H.265 from H.264 is the ablity to expand the size of these areas into bigger or smaller blocks. All coding tools employed in H.264 are improved or replaced in H.265.
